SHILLONG: The central body of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has reiterated its demand to reintroduce Khasi (MIL) as a compulsory subject at the higher secondary level.
An HYC delegation met Higher and Technical Education Minister Roshan Warjri here on Tuesday. The group also demanded introduction of history of the Khasis during the pre-British rule and Khasi literature in the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) syllabus.
Last year, HYC had urged MBoSE to reintroduce Khasi as a compulsory subject at the higher secondary level from the 2017 academic session.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, HYC General Secretary Robertjune K. Jahrin said Khasi students are not taking up Khasi (MIL), especially since it has become an optional subject.
“In some colleges they have not even appointed Khasi teachers and the number of students failing in the subject has increased,” he added.
“Many students are learning English and they get to know about Shakespeare and John Milton and it’s important for them to know about these great people.”
“However, we also need to promote our local poets,” said Jahrin.
The Minister said that the Government would re-examine the matter with MBoSE officials.
On the inclusion of History of Meghalaya, Warjri assured that the government would increase local content in the syllabus.
