Shillong: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday inaugurated Sohiong C&RD Block in the presence of C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and also laid the foundation stone for Sohiong Rural Market.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural function, Sangma said Sohiong C&RD Block is the first among the new blocks to become functional from the day of its inauguration.
“The agenda of development and prosperity in the State is the shared agenda of the people and there is a need to ensure that no one dislocates this momentum of growth and development,” he said.
Sangma also said all blocks need to work with Village Employment Councils (VEC) and that the government has decided to spend Rs 1,000 crore through MGNREGS by engaging the VECs. A part of the MGNREGA component will be used for livelihood programmes and activities.
“We should work in convergence and partnership to ensure that the aspirations of people are fulfilled and a sense of well-being and hope prevails in the State,” the Chief Minister said.
Later, the Chief Minister also handed over work orders under MGNREGS to VECs of four villages under the newly inaugurated Sohiong C&RD Block.
Sangma also expressed his gratitude to North Eastern Council for fast tracking the Rs 11.5-crore Rural Market project at Sohiong. The Council has given Rs 10.35 crore for the project that is expected to be complete by October 2019.  Among others who spoke at the inaugural function were Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and East Khasi Hills DC P.S Dkhar, among others.
