Nongpoh: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People , Byrnihat circle has asked the Marda Industries Private Limited, a brick manufacturing company situated at Umjojwa village in Ri Bhoi to minimize the air pollution caused by the production unit in the area.
The FKJGP members were accompanied by local headman and villagers during their inspection of the company’s site, Umjojwa village under Exports Promotion Industrial Parks (EPIP), an industrial area at Byrnihat on Saturday.
Residents of the area have had to deal with the foul smell and pollution caused by the brick-manufacturing unit which has turned out to be a health hazard for the locals.
During the meeting the director of the company admitted to the problem and assured that steps are being taken to minimise the pollution caused by the production.
According to FKJGP members the director informed that the foul smell was being caused due to a technical failure and a pipeline for filtering the steam into the water through separate outlet will be installed soon so as to avoid the steam from being released in the open air.
“As the required equipment is not available in Guwahati, we are transporting them all the way from Delhi and Kolkata. We request the villagers to give us a week’s time to fix the problem,” the director reportedly said.
The FKJGP said that it would follow up on the matter.
