TURA: Traffic snarls and congestion during rush hours in Tura town has become a serious problem for commuters and keeping this in mind the administration of West Garo Hills held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi on Wednesday to work out a solution.
Members of the district committee felt there was a need to have in place a policy for the safety of pedestrians, commuters, children and the elderly on the roads of Tura town which has experienced a staggering rise in the number of vehicles on its roads.
During the discussion it was agreed that one of the ways to address the traffic problem was by adding or removing and also turning some connection sub-ways into one ways.
The widening of roads wherever possible, removing of encroachments from the road sides and construction of embarkation and disembarkation points were also taken into consideration.
Two lay byes, at Tura Civil Hospital and Sericulture department in New Tura, are currently under construction to ease the parking problem in the town.
“We need to take recourse to preventive and corrective steps to minimise traffic congestions, said the DC.
