SHILLONG: Hoping to give tourism a fillip and also promote philately in these days of emails, Facebook and Twitter, India Post on Thursday released a series of 41 postcards depicting Meghalaya’s tourist spots, its culture and its people.
The idea came from tourists visiting the state who wanted to carry back a remembrance of Meghalaya, Postmaster General Panger Nungsang said at a function to release the postcards. He said the initiative would not just promote postcards that had become obsolete but also philately.
The postcards will be kept at branch post offices, including the Mawlynnong post office thronged by hundreds of tourists every day. Aiming to reach a wider global audience, they will also be available online through e-post office. Besides, philatelists will be keen to buy postcards from the region.
Each postcard costs Rs. 5; a pack of 41 postcards in a red carry bag is priced at Rs. 205.
India Post is also contemplating the release of similar postcards from other states in the region.
