Acid attack victim awaits compensation for almost two years

SHILLONG: An acid attack victim in the city is yet to receive compensation package as the matter is still pending with the Meghalaya Legal Service Authority.
It was on March 27, 2015, that the victim, Jagdish Prasad Sharma, a resident of Laban Last Stop, was attacked by the accused identified as Kanak Deb Nath.
Nath, who was running a vehicle battery shop in the same locality, threw acid on Sharma’s face.
Sharma sustained serious injuries on both eyes and face. Immediately, he was taken to Civil Hospital and the matter was reported to Laban police station by his nephew.
Later, in July the same year, in his letter addressed to the District and Sessions Judge cum Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority for the compensation, the victim said he had sustained mental agony and financial loss.
According to the victim, due to the accident, he has to wear contact lenses on both eyes.
An official source said that the recommendation for compensation was forwarded to the Meghalaya Legal Service Authority by the District and Sessions Judge.
The lawyer for the victim, K. Sunar, said necessary papers were submitted to the authorities concerned and the victim is still waiting for the compensation.
