TURA: A group of NGOs brought out a protest march against doctors at Dainadubi in North Garo Hills on Tuesday after a suicide victim died on Monday night allegedly due to medical negligence.
A 28-year-old woman, who tried to commit suicide by consuming poison, was taken to Dainadubi health centre, 25 km from district headquarters Resubelpara, on Monday night. But there was allegedly no doctor on duty.
While being taken to a hospital in Goalpara district she died on the way.
What ensued was an altercation between the public and the doctors at the health centre.
The doctors then filed an FIR and complained that they were frequently targeted by patients’ relatives.
However, members of the NGOs – Dainadubi-Wageasi Public Joint Action Committee, All A’chik Youth Federation, GSU and other bodies – alleged that they were abused when they sought an explanation from the authorities at the health centre.   The protesters demanded action against the doctors of Dainadubi CHC and wrote to Kharkutta MLA Cherak W. Momin in this regard.
The organisations also demanded that the doctors withdraw the FIR, which the latter rejected.
Police on Tuesday tightened security in the hospital area. The district medical and health officer, Dr (Mrs) Daisy K Sangma, visited the health centre on Tuesday and later held a meeting with the police and other district authorities.
