SHILLONG, July 12: The Executive Committee (EC) of the Dorbar Shnong Raid Sawkur Nongkseh has distanced itself from village resident Willybert Thangkhiew over allegations of fraud and cheating, and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the complaints against him.
In a press statement, the Dorbar Shnong clarified that Thangkhiew is neither a member of its EC nor has he ever been authorised to represent the village authority in any capacity.
Addressing the issue, Nongkseh Rangbah Shnong M. Thangkhiew said, “He has no authority to represent the Dorbar Shnong in any capacity. He does not hold any office or responsibility under the EC, and the Dorbar Shnong shall not be held responsible for any of his actions or representations.”
The Dorbar Shnong stated that it had received several complaints from people alleging that Thangkhiew had cheated individuals and dishonestly obtained money from them. He was subsequently summoned before the EC, where he reportedly acknowledged the allegations, expressed remorse and submitted a written undertaking assuring the Dorbar that he would refrain from engaging in such activities in the future.
However, the village authority said it has recently become aware of fresh allegations circulating on social media, claiming that Thangkhiew had been collecting money from unemployed youths by falsely promising jobs in the Police and other government departments.
Describing the allegations as serious, the EC said it was compelled to issue the clarification to prevent members of the public from being misled into believing that the accused had any official connection with the Dorbar Shnong.
The EC further categorically denied the involvement of any of its members or any organisation functioning under the village authority in the alleged illegal activities attributed to Thangkhiew.
According to the statement, the EC, during its meeting held on July 7, condemned Thangkhiew’s alleged activities within and outside the jurisdiction of Nongkseh.
The Dorbar Shnong also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and avoid paying money to any individual on the promise of securing government employment or other undue favours. It advised people to verify the authenticity of such claims directly with the government authorities concerned before making any financial commitment.
The village authority asked law enforcement agencies to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the allegations and take appropriate legal action if any offence is established.
