Mawngap police station inaugurated
SHILLONG: In a bid to strengthen policing in the State, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated one of the 18 new police stations at Mawngap, East Khasi Hills on Wednesday.
As many as 16 more police stations will be inaugurated shortly in various districts of the State.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration, Sangma said children and women must feel secure in every nook and corner of the state. He added that the state government is drawing a plan to strengthen the Police department. He observed that police personnel should acclimatize themselves to the varied challenges confronted in urban and rural areas.
“Criminals should know that they are not above law,” Sangma said.
Speaking on the potentialities of nature and way of life in a safe and secure society, he said, “Nobody can stop us to become the most prosperous state in the country.”
Referring to the Terra Madre festival held at Mawphlang in 2015, he said that there is a need to preserve and promote the cultural heritage and utilise these events to promote tourism.
State DGP SB Singh, who was also present on the occasion, said that the creation of 18 new police stations in the State should be considered a big leap forward. “The police stations will take special care to ensure that crime against women and children come down significantly,” he added. “We are here to ensure that human rights are protected and we are accountable for it,” Singh said.
Mawphlang MLA Kennedy Khyriem and Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh were also present on the occasion.
The newly inaugurated police station has been bifurcated from Laban police Station and will cater to Sohiong, Mawphlang and parts of Mylliem.
Besides, North-Pomlum, 7th mile, East-Maweitnai, South-Mawspong and West-Mawmaram will come under the jurisdiction of Mawngap police station.
