Water scarcity in South Shillong
SHILLONG: The Committee on Subordinate Legislation chaired by South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai on Thursday issued a ten-day deadline to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Shillong Cantonment Board to sort out the water scarcity problem in cantonment areas including Jhalupara.
The Committee on Thursday summoned the senior officials of the PHE and Shillong Cantonment Board and questioned them over the scarcity of water in the cantonment areas.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Shullai said that if the problem of water scarcity is not resolved by the Shillong Cantonment Board within 10 days, the panel would be forced to file a PIL before the court since residents in the cantonment pay tax for water.
He also said that the Shillong Cantonment Board has been asked to furnish reports along with necessary documents before the committee within 10 days.
Shullai informed that the decision to summon the officials of the Shillong Cantonment Board and PHE department was taken at a public meeting held in
Jhalupara recently where issues pertaining to water scarcity in the area were discussed.
