TURA: Close on the heels of the entire ASAK outfit surrendering to police a day earlier, a cadre of the banned GNLA has also given himself up to authorities in South Garo Hills after fleeing from his group on Friday.
The 22-year-old rebel Chadam Ramed A Marak, who went by the names of Mad and Chitmang, had joined the outfit in March 2015 and belonged to the 7th batch of recruits who underwent arms training.
He hailed from Taidang Nachi Chiring village of South Garo Hills. He revealed that he was placed in the command of GNLA chief Sohan D Shira along with others following the mass surrender of the group’s cadres and commanders to Meghalaya police in recent months.
He was with Sohan at Rongtol village of West Khasi Hills on February 24 when he slipped away and fled towards the Garo Hills border. Sohan is said to have as many as sixteen well armed rebels with him and was operating from the Shallang region.
Fearing of being chased by the group the deserter rebel walked through different jungle routes all the way through remote Kalu taking an entire week before reaching Siju village of South Garo Hills on Thursday night.
He reached out to church leaders expressing his willingness to surrender and gave himself up before district police chief Abraham T Sangma at Baghmara. He did not hand over any weapon.
