TURA: A well-coordinated operation on Thursday morning involving police from two districts of Garo Hills and neighbouring Assam has led to the rescue of a woman and her young daughter who were abducted from the nearby state.
The victims hailed from Nokatgre village of South Garo Hills district and were abducted after they went to Gaibanda village in neighbouring Assam.
Two men, posing as areca nut     traders, invited Beken Marak, his wife and daughter to Gaibanda village in south Salmara district of Assam on Monday and said they were interested in buying their produce.
The village located across the inter-state border is barely 6 km away from Tikrikilla police station of West Garo Hills district.
When the family met the duo, Md. Nul Jamal and Md Jhan, in the village, both the woman and her daughter were detained and the father was asked to go back to his village and return with Rs 50,000 as ransom.
When informed, police from Baghmara, Tikrikilla and their counterparts from Assam launched a joint operation on Wednesday night.
The police managed to rescue both the girls from a house early on Thursday morning and also nabbed one of the criminals, Md. Nul Jamal, from the village. Md Jhan managed to give police a slip and a search operation is continuing to bring him to book.
