SHILLONG: The NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has given the university administration time till next Tuesday to solve the accommodation problem.
NEHUSU had suggested that the University can hire private hostels as it was done in 2009 to tide over space crisis in hostels.
It had also recommended utilising the two unused buildings near the Convocation Hall and the bamboo huts for NEHU students rather than leasing them to NIT. The administration in a meeting with NEHUSU representatives, promised to utilise the revenue of Rs 4,50,000 per month generated from leasing the bamboo huts to NIT to hire private hostels outside the campus.
The union has said if the administration fails to meet the demands, then it would resort to large-scale agitation.  The students organised a protest march on the evening of March 7-8 and locked the office of the Dean of Students Welfare.
