NONGPOH: The driver of an oil tank truck and two other occupants were charred to death when the vehicle caught fire after hitting a barricade near a village in Ri Bhoi on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened around 5.30am. The driver of the tanker (MN03 T 0776) going towards Silchar via Shillong bypass lost control at a sharp turn at Mawpun Kshaid village and hit the barricade. The tanker overturned and caught fire.
The three occupants did not get time to escape and their charred bodies were later found near the burnt vehicle. The police said though they rushed to the spot they could not save the trio due to the blazing flames.
“The deceased men were completely burned and could not be identified. We are waiting for the postmortem reports,” a police officer said.
The police said they were trying to find out the owner of the vehicle so that the bodies could be handed over to the families after all formalities.
