M’laya kick boxers to take part in training in Pune

SHILLONG: Members of the Meghalaya Association of Kickboxing Organisations (MAKO) namely Francis RR Songthiang, Kynton U Mon, Pynshai Mawrie, Jerry Fiscal Wankhar, Lamphrang Kharsahnoh and Ferdinand Suchiang has been selected to represent Meghalaya in the forthcoming International Kickboxing Training Seminar for Coaches and Players to be held in Pune from March 24 to April 2. Coaches from Kyrgyztan will conduct the training in connection with the preparation of the WAKO-India Kickboxing Team to participate in the forthcoming WAKO-ASIA Kickboxing Championship to be held from April 24 to April30 at Ashgabad, Turkmenistan. The event will also serve as the test event for the next Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Game under the patronage of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The seminar is also a part of the preparation of the Indian Kickboxing Team to the WAKO-World Cup Senior World Championship 2017 in Brazil and WAKO-World Championship 2017 in Hugary.

Inter Office Badminton Tournament in Nongstoin

NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills District Badminton Association (WKHDBA) will be organising an Inter Office Badminton Tournament 2017 in various disciplines at Indoor Stadium in Nongstoin from April 19 to April 20. The tournament will be organized in Team events and Individual events. For detailed information, participants can meet the Association or contact 9436104738 or 9615340603.

SSA affiliation renewal and transfer of players

SHILLONG: The Shillong Sports Association in a press release here informed that last date for renewal of affiliation and participation in the U-15 Tournament is March 25. The Association has also intimated that players interested in seeking transfer for 2017 may collect the transfer forms from March 21 onwards.

1st Uplifter Open K-out cricket tourney begins

SHILLONG: The Uplifter Alternative inaugurated the 1st Uplifter Open K-out Cricket Tournament 2017 at Madan Nongthymmai here. The first match was won by Pohktieh Young Fighters who defeated Friend’s Club in Super Over. Both the teams scored 52 runs losing all their wickets in their allotted ten overs. In the second match, Willdrich Sporting Club defeated All Jaintia Thunder SS by 52 runs. Batting first, Willdrich Sporting Club scored a mammoth 107 runs for the loss of eight in ten overs. In reply, All Jaintia Thunder S.S could manage to score 55 runs losing eight wickets in ten overs. The last match of the day was won by Roshni by six wickets against PSWS Municipal. PSWS Municipal scored 58 runs losing five wickets in ten overs and it was easily chased by Roshni in 7.3 over’s.

Sweden’s Santiago Nieva to be India’s new boxing coach

NEW DELHI: The International Boxing Association’s coaches commission vice-Chairman Santiago Nieva will be India’s new foreign coach for men boxers, filling a position left vacant by Cuban B I Fernandes in 2014. Nieva, an AIBA three star coach, was attached with the Swedish men’s team until last year. He quit the position after the Rio Olympics. The Sweden-based Nieva, who even represented Argentina during his competitive days, is being brought on board till the World Championships this year after which the federation will take a call on the extension of his contract. The World Championships are scheduled from August 25 to September 3 in Hamburg, Germany. (PTI)

Djokovic, Murray pull out of Miami Open

MIAMI: World number two Novak Djokovic won’t defend his ATP Miami Masters title next week, saying on Sunday that he was withdrawing because of injury. Djokovic joins world number one Andy Murray on the sidelines for the elite hard court tournament. Murray pulled out Saturday with an elbow injury. (AFP)
