Man threatened, robbed in Tura
SHILLONG: A man was robbed by two unidentified armed miscreants in Tura. On March 19, two unidentified miscreants loaded with a handgun, entered the room of Shrikanth Banerjee at SMELC Building, Tura. The miscreants threatened him and also took away Rs 3,500.
2 held for timber smuggling
SHILLONG: Two persons have been detained in North Garo Hills for illegally transporting teak timbers to Assam, without valid documents. On March 19, during vehicle checking at Gairong, Police have detected one Maruti car (AS-01T-1396) along with two occupants, Tengsrang Marak (26) and Anil M Sangma (18), while they were illegally transporting teak timbers to Assam. Later, the Police handed the accused over to Forest Officer at Dainadubi.
Awareness programme on social evils
SHILLONG: The World Vision India, East Khasi Hills District in collaboration with Dorbar Shnong Laitkyrhong and Laitkyrhong Sports Club organised an awareness programme on ‘eradication of social evils’ at Mawkynrew on Tuesday. A football match was organised prior to the function. Banteidor Lyngdoh, MDC of Mawkynrew, who was the chief guest for the programme called for unity to root out evils from the society.
NPP Youth Wing elects office bearers
TURA: The new office bearers of the National People’s Party (NPP)’s Youth Wing in West Garo Hills were elected on Monday in Tura. The Youth Wing elected Ian Botham K Sangma as president, Waldim Sangma and Diraj Marak as vice president, Rangbat D Sangma as general secretary, Biddu A Sangma and Jaman Sangma as joint secretaries, Tengsmit Momin as chief organising secretary, Balnang Sangma and Odinal Sangma as organising secretaries, Tesan B Sangma as working president, Welborn Marak and Tesan Marak as Games and sports secretaries, J Tengsang Sangma as treasurer, Walmichang Shira and Silban R Marak as publicity secretaries, Chonu Marak as Arts and Cultural secretary and Brian Arengh as legal adviser.
DC prohibits sand mining
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi has issued an order prohibiting sand mining activities from riverbeds in the entire West Garo Hills District. Under the order, any person (s), group(s), companies and authorities have been prohibited from carrying out sand mining activities without obtaining environmental clearance from MoEF/SEIAA including a written order from the District Administration.
  Training programme on organic farming
SHILLONG: The College of Post Graduate Studies , Barapani, under the patronage of Central Agricultural University, Imphal is organising a five-day farmers’ training programme for promotion of organic/natural farming in the region.  The training programme, which began on Tuesday, is sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi under the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Unnat Krishi Shiksha Yojana.  30 farmers mostly from East Khasi Hills, participated in the training.
