TURA: A gang of inter-state dacoits operating from neighbouring Assam were in for a rude shock when they raided a house in Garobadha area of West Garo Hills on Tuesday night only to be attacked with a dagger by the owner leading to injury to one of the attackers.
A group of 5-6 unidentified men carrying daggers and other lethal weapons first raided the home of the village nokma of Mangapara in Garobadha but had to beat a hasty retreat after an alarm was raised by those on night vigilance duty. Unsuccessful on their first raid, the same gang of criminals then raided the house of Morenga Hajong at nearby Dapgre village. They broke through the door of the house and were attempting to ransack the place when the head of the house mustered up courage to take them head on.
Hajong was able to pull out a knife with which he attacked the group managing to injure one of the attackers. Seeing one of their own grievously injured with a stab wound the gang abandoned the robbery and fled with their injured partner across the inter-state border into neighbouring Assam.
This is not the first time citizens of Garobadha town have been at the receiving end of criminal gangs operating from neighbouring Assam.
On the eve of Republic Day this year, a gang of marauding criminals attacked the home of a trader assaulting the inmates of the house and robbing them of their jewellery and other precious items. Five members of the family, including two women, had to be rushed to Guwahati for advanced medical treatment following the attack which West Garo hills police have so far failed to make any breakthrough into.
