TURA: A 55-year-old trader from Garobadha town, who was assaulted by a gang of dacoits from neighbouring Assam in January, succumbed to injuries on Thursday.
Tapan Ghosh passed away at Dhekiajuli town of Sonitpur district. He and four members of his family were attacked on the night of January 23 by the marauding dacoits.
Ghosh was hit on the head with a dagger that left him bleeding profusely. His wife Geetarani (49), sons Taposh Ghosh (30) and Rajesh Ghosh (28) and their aunt Suchitra Ghose (32) were also grievously injured in the attack. The dacoits robbed them of their valuables and cash.
The injured members had to be taken to Guwahati for treatment and Tapan was kept in the intensive care unit for several weeks. Even after two surgeries he did not recover.
After spending Rs 18 lakh on treatment and with no help from any quarters, the family was compelled to take him out of the hospital. He was taken to a relative’s house at Dhekiajuli near Tezpur where he died on Thursday.
The news of his death led to a surge of emotions in Garobadha, 35 km from Tura. Residents were shocked and saddened. At the same time, they were angry at the failure of the police in arresting the perpetrators.
The police outpost is 200m away from the Ghosh’s residence. But police took over one and a half hours to reach the crime scene on January 23. They have also failed to solve the case even after two months.
