License renewal
Shillong: The district magistrate of South West Garo Hills has issued a final notice for renewal of arms licenses and getting the UIN from the office of the Deputy Commissioner before March 31. Licenses of those arms holders who fail to renew and get the UIN within the specified date will cease to be valid, the notice says.
Death of trade union leader condoled
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations has condoled the sudden demise of Bhawanipada Bhattacharjee, a veteran trade union leader of Shillong, in Bengaluru on March 22. Bhattacharjee who worked at the Accountant General Office in Shillong and Guwahati was the secretary of the Audit and Accounts Employees’ Association, Shillong for several years and was later elected as general secretary of All India Audit & Accounts Employees’ Association. Bhattacharjee spearheaded a host of workers’ movement in Meghalaya and Assam. He was instrumental in formation of Meghalaya May Day Committee in early 1990s which was later made into as Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations.The association and the Coordination Committee of Central Government Employees will jointly organise a condolence meeting on March 29 at BSNL Employees’ Union office at CTO Compound at 4 pm.
Minor girl cheated, threatened
SHILLONG: A curious case of cheating and intimidation has been reported from Baghmara in South Garo Hills.Naga D Sangma has lodged a complaint that Sandaywith S Marak of Dosikgittim pretended to be a bachelor and had an affair with the former’s 15-year-old daughter. However, when the girl learnt that Sandaywith was married she rejected his advances.The accused then threatened the girl with dire consequences, claiming that he was in possession of a pistol. He also threatened to file a case against the girl’s family. Police said they were investigating the matter.
Man held for passing lewd comments against woman
SHILLONG: Police have arrested Maniraj Gujar (25) for allegedly passing lewd comments on women inside the NEHU campus. Police said that on Wednesday evening, Gujar passed indecent comments on a woman who was filling fuel in her vehicle at NEHU campus petrol pump, Mawlai Umshing.
Play on mental health issue enacted
SHILLONG: The Trained Psychotherapeutic Professionals of Meghalaya (TTPM) in collaboration with students of Sankardev College, St Edmund’s College and Umshyrpi College enacted a play to highlight the need to ensure that issue of mental health is not neglected.The enacted play titled ‘O.K.’, by Naomi Bhuyan, assistant lecturer, Sankardev College portrayed mental health patients and their doctors and highlighted the issues faced by them. “It is high time we talk of mental issues,” Lakyntiew Paswett, coordinator of TTPM told reporters after the play which was enacted inside the MUDA complex.
