Salary, pension hike for State legislators

SHILLONG: MLAs had thousands of reasons to cheer on the last day of the budget session on Friday.
The Assembly hiked the salary and allowances of MLAs by approving the Meghalaya Legislators Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2017, on Friday.
As per the amended bill, the existing salaries and other allowances of the chief minister, speaker, deputy CM, deputy speaker, ministers, parliamentary secretaries and MLAs have been revised.
The MLAs, who earlier received Rs 1.03 lakh, will now get Rs 1.60 lakh. With allowances, the amount is expected to reach Rs 2 lakh.
The House also passed the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya Members Pension (Amendment) Bill, 2017 to revise the members’ pension from the existing Rs 17,000 to Rs 30,000. The medical allowance has also been increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000.
