Minor sexually assaulted
SHILLONG: A 16-year-old boy sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl in a village in   West Khasi Hills. A woman lodged a complaint that on March 25 around 6 pm, the teenage boy sexually assaulted her minor daughter at Thawdang, Pyndengrei village. The accused fled away when the victim raised an alarm.

Trucks without challan detected
SHILLONG:   Police detected three trucks at Nongpoh while transporting coal without challan on Tuesday around 1 pm. The coal laden trucks bearing registration number (AS-01FC-2913) was driven by O.P Kharumnuid, (AS-01FC-2713) driven by Hamewanki Shangpun and the driver of (ML-10A-3929) was Ericson Mawthoh.

Man held for theft
SHILLONG: Police have arrested one person for stealing building materials from an under construction site of Mizoram State House at Mawkasiang. The materials were stolen around 1.30 pm on Tuesday. Aibor Kharmujai (30) has been arrested in this connection and iron rods and other building materials have been recovered from his possession.

E-governance campaign
TURA: A special campaign, organised by the Government and banks, is going on to enable the public to seed their Aadhaar and mobile numbers with banks accounts, the South Garo Hills deputy commissioner said. The campaign will conclude on March 31. This is part of the e-Governance programme in realising the Centre’s aim to make all bank transactions digitally.
Exhibition on renewable energy use held
TURA: A one-day exhibition on new and renewable energy was organised by Meghalaya New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (MNREDA), Williamnagar, in tandem with Industries Department and Basin Development Unit of the district at Resubelpara Community Hall on Wednesday. The exhibition showcased solar devices like lanterns, water heaters, home and street lighting system and windmills, among others.

Hindi competitions held
SHILLONG: The office of the Accountant General (Audit), Meghalaya, organised various Hindi competitions on Tuesday in the office premises. The competitions were inaugurated by Smita Gopal, Senior Deputy AG (Administration). 20 staff of the office participated in events like Hindi quiz, spot official translation and Hindi debate.

Policemen debate on human rights  
SHILLONG: The final debate competition on human rights issues organized by NHRC and Meghalaya Police  was held at  police headquarters here on Wednesday. This year’s winners are Inspector B K Mishra, who was adjudged the best debater, SI   C. Fanai, first runner up and  SI Sagar Sharma, second runner up.  The topic for debate was, “Police have an obligation to respect human rights of all people”. The judges were B R Rana ADG (Headquarters),  F. Kharshiing  Commandant 6th  MLP battalion and  V R Syiem  Joint secretary Home (Police).

Anti-drug programme held
SHILLONG: The NSS Seng Khasi College Unit in collaboration with the Seng Samla Mawlai Nongp-deng organised a Drug Addiction Prevention Programme on Wednesday.  Dr Rica Lamar provided information about drug addiction and its ill effects on society. Over 100 students from the schools in Mawlai, NSS volunteers of Seng Khasi College, members of the Seng Longkmie and elders of Nongpdeng participated in the programme.

Handing over the reins of the Assam regiment colonelcy
SHILLONG: Lieutenant General Subrata Saha, Deputy Chief of Army Staff  (P & S) and Colonel of the Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts, who is superannuating after a glorious service of 39 years on March 31,  handed over the reins of the Assam Regiment to Lieutenant General Balwant Singh Negi, General Officer Commanding In Chief, Central Command in a function conducted with full military honours at the Regimental Centre in Happy Valley on Wednesday.

2nd essay competition concludes
SHILLONG: Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Shillong has organised the 2nd Essay Competition for the age group of 18 years on the theme “When You Conserve Water – You Conserve Life” for Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram zone. The competition concluded on Wednesday. Andrian Lara Nongbri, Army Public School, Shillong bagged the first prize carrying a cash reward of  Rs 50 thousand, Riya Singh of Army Public School bagged the second prize carrying a cash reward of Rs 25000 along with Sourarjita Datta, Holy Cross School, Agartala bagged the third prize carrying a cash reward of Rs 15000.

World Consumer Rights Day
SHILLONG: Bosco Integrated Development Society (BIDS) with a support of the Office of Deputy Commissioner Supply Ri Bhoi District organised the World Consumer Rights Day under the theme “Consumer Rights in the Digital Age” on March 27 at Bhoirymbong Community Hall. The resource persons present in the programme were G.H. Kharsawai, Sub inspector of Food and Supply Department, S. Diengngan, Food Safety Officer, S. Baruah, Deputy Manager of HDFC Bank, Nongpoh Branch, C. Lyngdoh, Advocate and BIDS staff. The Consumer Rights Day was also observed at Phek District in Nagaland with the theme “Consumer Right in the Digital Age” on March 15 at Christian Home High School, Phek Town.
