SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF), which was rumoured to be headed by suspended Congress leader P.N Syiem, will start its political innings from Friday.
PDF will be formally launched as a party at its office near the residence of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at Nongrim Hills.
Though the formation of the party was earlier announced on several occasions, the official announcement and the agenda of the party for the whole State will be made on Friday, PDF general secretary Auspicious L Mawphlang said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
Earlier, there were media reports that Syiem, who is also the KHADC chief executive member, will spearhead the party. However, he is yet to officially announce joining PDF and had hinted that the decision would be taken by July.
Working president of PDF Emlang Lyttan, who is a former FKJGP member, said MLAs and MDCs are free to join the new party.
“We have formed the party with like-minded people for a change in the political system aiming at transparency and accountability. We are a small group but the invitation is open for other leaders to join the party,” he added. party was first announced earlier this year at Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills and that it would contest the 2018 Assembly elections and 2019 Autonomous District Council polls.
Recently, Mawkyrwat president Y.G Lyngdoh said the ad hoc body of the new party was formed in February 2017 with Ibanlum Marbaniang as the president and Mawphlang as the general secretary.
The party will soon be registered with the Election Commission and it is expected to get a symbol by May 2017.
