Laban Bengalee Boys’ win in inter-school cricket tourney
Shillong: Laban Bengalee Boys H/S School thrashed Buddha Vidya Niketan School  by ten wickets in the inter-school cricket tournament at cricket ground, Polo on Thursday. Electing to bat first Buddha Vidya Niketan School were bundled out for 25 runs in 6. 5 overs. Md Sameer and Rana Das picked up six and four wickets respectively for Laban Bengalee Boys H/S School. In reply, Laban Bengalee Boys chased down the target with ease and scored 26 runs without losing any wickets in 3.2 overs. The match between Fariryland High School and Tender Child Secondary School could not be played due to rain so points were shared between the teams.

CM inter school athletics meet underway in Ampati
AMPATI: South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril VD Diengdoh on Thursday flagged off the Chief Minister’s Inter School Athletic Meet 2017 at Ampati Indoor stadium field, Ampati. The two day annual event is held every year by the department of sports and youth
affairs and aims at encouraging and supporting budding athletes to excel in athletics. Altogether twenty one schools from the district are participating in the meet.  The Deputy Commissioner accompanied by District Sports Officer Jasper P Marak later gave away medals to winners of various track and field events.

All regions get more slots in 2026 World Cup: FIFA
Zurich: All football regions will see their World Cup slots increased when the tournament expands to 48 teams in 2026, with Africa the biggest winner, according to FIFA recommendations released on Thursday. The plan to expand the competition beyond its current 32-team format, which is subject to approval at FIFA’s May Congress in Bahrain, guarantees Africa nine places, marking an increase of four. Asia, currently guaranteed between four and five World Cup entries, will get eight slots, while European confederation UEFA gets a boost from 13 to 16. The confederation for North, Central America and the Caribbean will have six places, above its current level of between three and four. (AFP)

Injured Monfils out of France Davis Cup squad
Paris: France made two changes as injured Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Gael Monfils were sidelined for a highly-anticipated clash with Britain in next month’s Davis Cup quarter-finals. According to the French Tennis Federation, Herbert suffered a thigh muscle injury while Monfils had ankle and knee problems. They were replaced by Julien Benneteau and Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency. World number 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, whose wife recently gave birth to a baby, will be absent for the match to be held from April 7-9 in Rouen, France. The hosts will also be without the experienced Richard Gasquet. Gilles Simon and Lucas Pouille will possibly feature in singles matches and Nicolas Mahut and Benneteau in the doubles. Chardy will be a substitute. However, French captain Yannick Noah may still make a last-minute changes to the team. (IANS)
