SHILLONG: The second institute day function of NIT Meghalaya was celebrated on its premises at Laitumkhrah on Saturday.
Addressing a gathering, Sarungbam Birendra Singh, director of the institute, called for nurturing new institutions.
Patricia Mukhim, editor of The Shillong Times, stressed on the need for good engineers “with an ethical outlook”.
Chief guest Ram Muivah, who is the secretary of the North Eastern Council, emphasised on the need to inculcate entrepreneurial spirit in young engineers.
Singh, who hoisted the institute’s flag, elaborated on the achievements of NIT, which has completed five years on its current campus and its new campus is being developed at Sohra.
The NIT Meghalaya Society was formed on April 1, 2010.
The institute will confer first PhD degrees during its convocation in June. A physically challenged student of NIT was recently selected for a presentation of his product under start-up India at the Rastrapati Bhavan. A brief documentary on the progress of NIT Meghalaya was presented on the occasion and students and staff members were felicitated.
Debnath Shaw, retired ambassador, spoke on India’s foreign policy. The event ended with a vote of thanks by the Associate Dean of Academics, Anup Dandapat.
