Assam woman lodges rape complaint
Kolkata: A woman from Assam on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Kolkata Police alleging that she was raped by a person in the city. The woman lodged a complaint at the Lake Police Station alleging that a man, a resident of Salt Lake had raped her a number of times and had also forced her to abort twice, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. As per her complaint the woman in her early 30s alleged that the man, who befriended her on a social network met her at a restaurant sometime early last year where they consumed alcohol, he said. She fell unconscious and the accused took her to a guest house and raped her. The victim also accused that the man was threatening her to release a video he had filmed of the rape. (PTI)
Local holiday for Dhemaji
Guwahati: The Assam government has declared April 9 as a local holiday in Dhemaji district as the by-election to the Dhemaji assembly constituency will he held on that day. The Assam government has also declared the day as a paid public holiday, a state government release said. The government declaration will be applicable to offices of the state and Central government, public sector undertakings (PSU), corporations, boards, banks and educational institutions, it said. As per a notification announced of the Election Commission of India counting of votes will be on April 13 and the entire election process must be completed by April 15. The by-election to the Dhemaji assembly constituency was necessitated as BJP MLA Pradan Baruah vacated the seat after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Lakhimpur seat. (PTI)
IIT-G ranks eighth in ‘Overall category’ by NIRF
Guwahati: The IIT Guwahati has been ranked eighth by the NIRF among all the participating universities and institutions and seventh among the top engineering institutions in the country. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under union MHRD has in the India Rankings – 2017 awarded these positions to IIT-G which has “again brought laurels to the North East region”, said a press release of the premier engineering institute on Tuesday. Prof Gautam Biswas, Director of the Institute credited the faculty and students, research fellows as well as the staff members and officer of IIT-G for the honour. “We need to move forward with higher targets in mind. We require to scale newer heights”, he added. Two other institutions of higher education in Assam have also figured in the top fifty of overall ranking of NIRF India Rankings – 2017. The Gauhati University secured 43rd rank whereas the Tezpur University secured 48th rank. In the university level ranking, Gauhati University secured 27th rank, Tezpur University (30), Dibrugarh University (74) and Assam University (92), a release said. In the College Level Ranking Jagannath Barooah College (JB College), Jorhat, has secured 64th rank. It is the only college from Assam to find a place in the ranking, a release said. (PTI)
AMC sends suspected fake eggs for testing
Agartala: Prompted by the campaign of fake and plastic made eggs, food safety and health officials of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) carried out raids in different markets of the city and collected samples of suspected eggs.
AMC Commissioner Debapriya Bardhan said on Tuesday that the samples collected were sent to central food testing laboratory and after getting the report if found anything mischievous, then appropriate action would be taken against the dealers and retail sellers. He pointed out besides enforcement, AMC authority had inspected the import documents of all the egg stockists and dealers of Agartala, which revealed that eggs in Tripura come from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. However, there was no reference of egg import from neighbouring Bangladesh or any other country, Mr Bardhan said, adding that the state government had undertaken measures to stop entry of fake eggs in the state. Moreover, extensive vigilance have been laid to check over eggs and other adulterated food items available in the markets. A few months ago with the direction of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the Tripura government issued alert to each school of the state implementing mid-day meal scheme for upper primary level students to be beware of fake eggs. FSSAI communication had sent warnings to all the state governments that fake eggs containing artificial and injurious element were imported into the Indian market from neighbouring country. FSSAI was reported of the presence of fake eggs in several states, including West Bengal and Kerala. Director of the state’s elementary education U K Chakma said that FSSAI has alerted the state government to be careful in procuring and consumption of eggs in mid-day meal in the schools. (UNI)
