Palm Sunday celebrated across Mizoram
Aizawl: Palm Sunday, locally known as Tumkau Ni, was celebrated across Mizoram on Sunday amidst prayer and worship services in churches and children taking out processions and singing hymns. Sunday school students carrying palm leaves took out processions on Sunday morning to commemorate the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem city on the last Sunday before his crucifixion. The children were heard shouting ‘Hosanna’ and singing hymns in the processionas, taken out in the villages and urban localities. Prayer services were held in the churches of different Christian denominations. (PTI)

Three charred to death in Mizoram
Aizawl: Three persons of a family were charred to death when their house caught fire at Tleu hamlet in Lunglei district, police said on Sunday. The victims have been identified as Tahla (50), his son Bawmita (10) and one-year-old daughter Merry. The fire was reportedly caused due to electric short circuit, they said. Tahla’s wife and his another daughter were rescued by the neighbours, police said. (PTI)

IED found on Manipur CM’s travel route
Imphal: A powerful IED was recovered on Saturday by Assam Rifles personnel on Imphal-Ukhrul road through which the Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh is scheduled to travel on April 11, the police said. The spot where the bomb was found is about 15 km away from Ukhrul town in Ukhrul district. Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh was scheduled to visit Ukhrul town on Tuesday to meet leaders of social organisations there, the police said. The police also said that a team of 27 Assam Rifles personnel recovered the IED around 10 am. The IED was wrapped in a polythene bag at a culvert along the CM’s scheduled route. The personnel were conducting a search operation in the area including Hundung Cement Factory when the bomb was detected, the police said. An Assam Rifles bomb squad later defused it, an Assam Rifles PRO said. (PTI)

871 km of the Brahmaputra in Assam will be dredged
Guwahati: A total of 871 km of the mighty Brahmaputra in Assam will be dredged with the Centre bearing its expenditure, said a senior official of the Inland Water Transport department. Survey of 300 km of the Brahmaputra has been completed so far by the state PWD department for dredging of the river, said Inland Water Transport director, B B Dev Choudhury while participating in an All India Radio News talk show last night. Choudhury said help of experts will be taken for the dredging. The Inland Water Transport director said the dredging will bring opportunities to Assam as the state will get access to Chittagong port in Bangladesh benefiting 54 lakh people in the state involved in the water transport system, besides tourism getting a boost through improved water transport system. He said water taxi service will be introduced in Guwahati this year and the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 1000 crore for the development of Inland water transport in Assam. (PTI)
