NONGSTOIN: The headman of Shallang B on Tuesday filed an FIR against three drunken SF-10 commandoes who misbehaved with locals and allegedly sexually harassed a woman.
Speaking to the media at Shallang, Odin D. Sangma, headman of Shallang B Songsak, said the three SF-10 men harassed people in five to six shops, threw food and were indecent with women whom the policemen tried to scare with guns.
The cops allegedly stole mobile phones from a local shop owned by a Marwari trader.
Odin said the local police were lauded for tackling militant groups which were once active in Shallang but “now that the militants are scared to enter Shallang, police are acting like militants and robbing locals”.
“In May 1997, we saw ANVC militants spreading terror and we had the police to protect us. But on April 17, it (the commandoes’ behaviour) once again reminded us of the old days and the way the SF-10 men behaved was similar to that of ANVC in 1997,” one of the shopkeepers in Shallang said.
Odin said Shallang villagers have demanded that the errant police personnel be suspended. He also said the trio should apologise to all those whom they harassed and assaulted.
A source told The Shillong Times that Shallang police have registered a case. The police have assured that the three personnel will be detained soon.
