SHILLONG: Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday blamed Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for lack of development in Meghalaya.
Speaking to media persons here, Sarma said BJP will file a charge sheet against the Congress-led MUA government focusing on the scams, corruption charges and failures during Sangma’s tenure and take the list to the electorate.
Meghalaya is the worst performing state in the North East and deserves a zero as far as development is concerned, he observed.
Slamming the State Government for lack of development, he said there were talks about medical colleges in Tura and Shillong but promises remained unfulfilled.
“Tell me which new university has the Meghalaya Government set up here and we have not seen anything except those colleges and universities set up by the Central Government,” he said and added that the State is suffering due to ban on coal mining but nobody is concerned about it.
Sarma does not desire to meet Sangma “till he loses the 2018 Assembly elections” and “BJP would work 24×7 to ensure that Sangma does not even become an MLA in 2018”.
Reiterating that BJP would not admit Mukul Sangma even if he wants to join the party, the NEDA chief said though many MLAs have approached the party it would admit only those who are liked and loved by people.
When asked whether BJP is trying to topple the MUA government, he said the party did not intend to form a government for 9-10 months.
Hinting at the Congress’s internal differences in Meghalaya, Sarma said many influential leaders, whom he had discussions with when a no-trust motion was moved against the State Government, are unhappy.
“Many leaders had contacted me and they offered to form a new government here and when I contacted New Delhi, they said the BJP will form government in Meghalaya through elections,” he said.
An over-enthusiastic Sarma said BJP has targeted to win all the 60 seats in the State.
Claiming that Congress in Meghalaya will be left with no one, Sarma said BJP would not be able to admit all and some Congress leaders will join other parties as well.
The senior BJP leader, who met members of different BJP cells in the State, said the party will also come out with a vision document focusing on how Meghalaya can be turned into a frontrunner state in the next five years. “Citizens’ consultation meetings will be held in every district,” he added.
