Man arrested for raping nieces

SHILLONG: A man in Ri Bhoi was arrested for raping and threatening three minor girls related to him. The accused Wanbha Mawroh allegedly raped his wife’s nieces.
The incident came to light on April 13, when one of the victims, a seven-year-old girl narrated her ordeal of being molested and raped by her aunt’s husband Mawroh. The minor girl accused that she has been was repeatedly molested by Mawroh. The mother of the girl, who is a widow with five children, works in a stone quarry and had left her children in the care of her eldest daughter, who is a student of class 9.
The victim’s 12-year-old elder sister also revealed that she was sexually abused by the accused few years ago.
Another six-year-old cousin of the victims informed the elders that Mawroh had raped her too.
An FIR in this regard was filed at Khapmara Outpost, Umroi and a case was registered under POCSO Act and another FIR was filed by one of the victims at Umiam Police station leading to the arrest of the accused.
The NGOs and local residents while demanding action against the accused have also asked the State Government to compensate the girls under the Meghalaya Victim Compensation scheme.
