BJP Mahila Morcha re- constituted
SHILLONG: The BJP State Mahila Morcha, reconstituted the state executive body at a function held at the party office on Saturday. In a statement issued here on Sunday, Deeya Rathore, in-charge Media Cell said that while Pelcy Snaitang, is the newly appointed State President, Mahila Morcha, Sujata Chetri is the vice president.While Bina Rajee is in-charge Mahila Morcha, ,Sabnam Sahi is co-incharge, A. Paul is general secretary, administration and Mamta Chakravarty is in-charge legal cell. Suzette Kurbah is the secretary for East Khasi Hills.Other appointments are state executive members and the district functionaries.

Focus on mining and environment protection
SHILLONG: The importance of protecting the environment during mining operations was highlighted during the 8th Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Week 2016-17. The week-long event, which concluded on Sunday, was organised under the aegis of Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Guwahati Region, at the State Convention Centre in the city. Controller General Ranjan Sahai spoke of introducing solar energy, sustainable developmental frame work application of space technology (static images) for tracking illegal mining. The function was organised by Star Cement Limited under Devender Bansal, resident director, MK Rai, DGM (administration), Akhilesh Singh, DGM (Mines), Shikander Prasad, AGM (Mines) and Hijam Rakesh Singh, Assistant Manager (Geology). Trophies were given to companies for their performances. Lafarge Umiam Mining Private Ltd was awarded outstanding performance, Star Cement was the overall topper, and Meghalaya Cement and Adhunik Cement were the overall first and second runners-up, respectively.

LTS seminar on group building held
Shillong: Leadership Training Services (LTS) organised a one-day seminar on Group Building on April 30 in St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School at Laitumkhrah. Kh. Sïle Anthony, Director (HRD&E) North Eastern Council, enlightened 250 students, members of LTS from 11 schools in and around Shillong. The seminar which dealt with the theme, ‘We are One,’ commenced at 08.30 am and concluded by 03.00 pm. During the session Sïlle Anthony stressed on the need for charismatic leaders in today’s society. He also enriched the students on the qualities that leaders should possess. LTS is a movement that began in Calcutta in 1959 with the motto, “For God and the World.”It facilitates programs in view of training students to become leaders who will build up society.

Cattle, wood seized by BSF
SHILLONG: The BSF troops deployed at Balughat, South West Garo Hills apprehended one Indian cattle smuggler along with 21 cattle while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh recently.In another incident, the BSF troops deployed at Gaobari, South Garo Hills district seized 12 more cattle while being smuggled to Bangladesh. The BSF troops deployed at Baghmara seized 63.87 cft of wooden logs worth around Rs. 4 lakh on international border while being smuggled out to Bangladesh through Simsang river.

May day programme in city
SHILLONG: The apex body of all Trade Unions and Associations of the state, the Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTU&A) will observe ‘May Day’   on  May 1 with flag hoisting and workers and holding employees rally in Shillong. The May Day Flag’ will be hoisted at 11.30 a.m. which will be followed by paying homage to May Day martyrs and then workers and employees’ rally and adoption of May Day declaration along with resolutions. The programme will be held at CTO Complex, opposite of BSNL Employees’ Union room, adjacent to additional secretariat building, Vivekananda Road, Shillong. The MJCTU&A conveyed May Day greetings to all workers, employees and members of the public and urged all concerned citizens to join the programme.

MLCU organises health camp
Shillong: Martin Luther Christian University through its Department of Allied Health Sciences conducted a free health camp for the people residing in the village of Nonghali,  Mawryngkneng Block, East Khasi Hills, on April 29.Consultations with doctors and tests were also conducted by the students from MSc, BSc, and Diploma courses, Dept of AHS. The tests included blood test, BMI, Vital Signs, Diet and Nutrition counselling. Eye screening was also done by students from Bansara Eye Care Centre. Around 200 residents majority women and children below the age of 14 came to avail the facilities of the camp.The camp was initiated by the FKJGP, Nonghali Unit, Mawryngkneng Circle and the prescribed medicines were given free of cost as they were sponsored by the NSS, MLCU Unit.The camp was attended by two doctors, Dr. Baname W.D. Waanbah and Dr. Jyrwa.

My name is Eeooow screened at Raj Bhavan
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Sunday felicitated the director of the documentary film ‘My name is Eeooow’, Oinam Doren, and his team at Raj Bhavan.After the felicitation, the Khasi documentary film with English subtitle was screened before the audience which included Purohit, Principal Secretary to the Governor K.N Kumar, Fr. John D. Jayakumar, B.S Rumnong and more than 200 villagers from Kongthong and adjoining villages.The documentary film made in Kongthong village in East Khasi Hills district was directed by Doren and produced by Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, New Delhi. It was co-written and edited by Wanphrang Diengdoh and Baia Marbaniang assisted the director.The documentary revolves around the unique naming practice of the inhabitants of Kongthong village called the Jyngrwai Iawbei. The jyngrwai iawbei is the practice of having musical tunes as names. The names in songs come as an expression of the mother’s love for her newborn.

Secy of Shillong YMCA awarded best leader of NER
SHILLONG: D. L. Warjri, Secretary of Shillong Young Men’s Christian Association was awarded the Best YMCA Leader of the North Eastern Region at the Closing Function of the Quasquicentennial Celebrations of the National Council of YMCAs of India held at the Parish Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Maidan Kolkata held on April 26. Warjri received the award from the President of Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs Babu Markus Gomes and the president, National Council of YMCAs of India Lebi Philip Mathew in presence of Padma Shree Sourav Ganguly, president of Cricket Association of Bengal & Former Captain, Indian Cricket Team who was the chief guest.
Annual cleansing

Shillong: The annual Seng Khasi Kmie Mawkhar, Shillong cremation ground cleansing programme was held on Sunday at Jaiaw cremation ground, which was inaugurated by Adelbert Nongrum, MDC. A large number of youth drawn from different Seng Khasi units of Shillong and the suburbs took part in the programme. The Lum-jingthang committee of the Seng Khasi Mawkhar, expressed gratitude to all those who took part in the programme.
