Tripura gets new Chief Electoral Officer
Agartala: The Election Commission has appointed Tripura government’s Principal Secretary Sriram Taranikanti as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, an official said here on Monday.Taranikanti replaces S.K. Rakesh, who has moved to the central government on deputation.Taranikanti is an IAS officer of 1992 batch Tripura cadre and was looking after Transport, Food, Civil Suppliers and Consumer Affairs departments. Under his supervision the next assembly elections would be held in the Left-ruled state, an official said. Elections to the 60-seat Tripura assembly are likely to be held in February next year along with Nagaland and Meghalaya. (IANS)
Anthony Lianzuala takes over as new CGA
New Delhi: Anthony Lianzuala, 1982-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer, took over as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA) here on Monday, becoming the first person from the northeastern region to hold this position.Lianzuala, a graduate from the Hindu College of Delhi University, has experience in the government both at the Centre and the state levels. He has worked at higher positions in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Rural Development.Lianzuala was the first director of training institute in the field of public financial management and accounting in the northeast named INGAF-NER, based in Aizawl, Mizoram. “He is credited for his IT initiatives in the North-Eastern Region. He was instrumental in computerising the functions of the state treasuries of Mizoram,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement.He has also served in Mizoram as secretary in various departments including Agricultural Marketing, Border Trade and Relief and Rehabilitation. He was also selected as Managing Director of North Eastern Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), a public-sector undertaking based in Guwahati. (IANS)
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on a four-day trip to NE
Guwahati: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat will start his four day trip of North East India, which will begin from Assam on Tuesday, with an aim to strengthen the organisation’s base in states in the region which is dominated by Christian population. Bhagwat will arrive in Guwahati at 1100 hrs on Tuesday and will address workers in Keshav Dham-RSS headquarter in Assam. He will then travel to Hojai and will take part in a valedictory function at an ongoing RSS camp in the area. Bhagwat will also visit ongoing RSS training camps in Itanagar, Silchar and Karbi Anglong. Bhagwat’s four day long visit to the North Eastern states assumed significance on the backdrop of `cow vigilantism’ deaths in Assam. Prominently, tribal population in North East India are beef eaters and it would be interesting to RSS chief’s comments on the same issue. Time and again Bhagwats comment on the Christian missionary has created quite a flutter among various groups in the region. (UNI)
Sanjay Pratihar chosen for INSA medal for Young Scientist award
Guwahati: Sanjay Pratihar, a scientist at Tezpur University, has been chosen for the the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) medal for the Young Scientist Award for the year 2017. Pratihar of the Department of Chemical Sciences has been awarded for his excellent contribution to multi-metal complexes, theoretical understanding, selective sensing of Hq2+ions and important applications in agriculture, according to a release issued by the university said. The award, consisting of a bronze medal and cash award of Rs 25,000 will be given to him during INSA’s anniversary meeting scheduled in December. Instituted in 1974 by the Indian National Science Academy, the INSA medal for young scientists are awarded annually to honour talented young Indian scientists in recognition of their outstanding contributions in any branch of science or technology coming within the purview of the Academy. The research carried out in India by the nominees are taken into consideration for the award. Pratihar had earlier received ‘DST-INSPIRE Faculty’ award in July 2012 and had done his PhD in Organometallic Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. (PTI)
Investiture ceremony held at Sainik School Goalpara
Goalpara: Sainik School Goalpara (SSG), one of the pioneering institutes in the North Eastern region held its Investiture Ceremony in the school premises on May 1 with military precision to induct new school appointments for the Academic Session 2017-18. Maj Gen Ananta Bhuyan, Sena Medal and General Officer Commanding, 2 Mountain Division graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest who reviewed an impressive parade and bestowed appointments on 32 budding cadets of the school that included the School Captain, School Adjutant, Mess Captain, School Vice-Captains, House Captains & House Vice-Captains, Senior Prefects & Juniors Prefects. Capt (IN) Edwin Jothirajan, Principal of the school felicitated the Chief Guest. The appointments participated in an Oath Taking Ceremony donning colourful epaulettes, with promises to shoulder their responsibilities with dignity and honesty. A K Kushwaha, the Senior Master administered the oath for school code of conduct to all the cadets of the school. The parents of the appointments were also present on the occasion.During his visit to the school, the General inspected the school campus and interacted with the staff and the cadet appointments over tea.
May Day observed in Assam
Guwahati: Workmen across Assam observed May Day on Monday, demanding better working conditions and pay benefits for the working class people. Meetings were organised by different trade unions of organisations as well as political parties across the state.The NF Railway workers’ union marked the day by wearing black badges to protest the worldwide alleged exploitation of the working class.The Assam State Transport Corporation observed the day centrally at its workshop in the city, with its MD AP Tiwari also joining the workers in a solemn function on the occasion.Commercial vehicles remained mostly off the roads and big business houses and industrial units also did not function on Monday.
