SHILLONG: Police are still investigating into the alleged case of cheating of hundreds of villagers from Smit and Mawkynrew by a bank official and two others.
In March this year, residents of five villages from Smit and Mawkynrew had lodged FIR against the branch manager of Meghalaya Rural Bank, A Kharmutee, a traditional head, Kyrshiej Nongrum and one Timil Pyngrope for allegedly making them open bank accounts and sign documents on the pretext that they would be provided with a grant of Rs 10,000 from a Central scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
However, the villagers later discovered that the documents were used for availing loans from the bank ranging from Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh.
East Khasi Hills police chief Davis NR Marak said that investigation is on to see whether the branch manager of the bank has benefitted from the “scam”.
