Guwahati: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday directed the Public Works Department to draw a road map for developing the road starting from Kumbhirgram Airport which passes through Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj, in southern part of the state as a model road with adequate lighting and beautification.
Chairing a review meeting at Circuit House in Hailakandi in Barak Valley, Sonowal stressed on raising the pride of the people of Barak Valley through the construction of quality roads with proper beautification.
He added that only through development of good communication network the stigma of backwardness attached to the Barak Valley can be removed.
Sonowal said, “It is a challenge for the new government to bring about transformative changes in Barak Valley and to make this happen, people and the government officials must join hands with the government.”
He underlined the importance of quality contractors for carrying out development works in an effective manner and said the government is taking initiative to improve the skills of contractors and to motivate the young entrepreneurs.
The chief minister criticised ‘Wind Power’, a company implementing Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana in Hailakandi, for its alleged slow progress in the district and asked the concerned authority to pull up its socks and complete the implementation work on a war footing.
He also asked APDCL to supervise the implementation of rural electrification work to ensure its early completion.
Taking a stern view on the alleged encroachment of land along Assam-Mizoran border, Sonowal asked the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and Forest Department in the district to immediately visit the site and submit a report to the government.
He also directed the DC to develop an effective implementing mechanism for effective execution of Prime Minister’s Awaj Yojana and complete all pending cases by June this year.
Stressing that the Government of Assam is working with the agenda to ensure equal development of both Barak and Brahmaputra Valley, Sonowal said to realise it, all have to work hard with sincerity.
He said strict action will be taken against all illegal works and cases of misuse of funds.
The chief minister also reviewed the progress of the projects related to Public Health Engineering, APDCL, PMAY, Forest, PWD, Transport, Education, BSNL and Health Departments.
He said government schemes are targeted to benefit the poor and hence they are to be implemented for the beneficiaries to reap their benefits. (UNI)
