SHILLONG: The Congress will not project any chief ministerial candidate in the run-up to the polls in Meghalaya.
Replying to a question on the issue of chief ministerial candidate for the party, MPCC president DD Lapang said the Congress does not have the tradition of projecting anyone as the CM candidate.
The senior leader was addressing a news conference at his official residence on Wednesday.
Earlier, the youth Congress had projected Chief Minister Mukul Sangma as the next leader. “We never project any leader in advance prior to the polls and if at all it is required it is up to the AICC to do so,” Lapang said.
The MPCC president, however, said Sangma will continue to be the chief minister till the end of this term.
When asked about leadership in the post-poll scenario, the MPCC chief said, “Lapang and Mukul should not be offended if they are not on the list of CLP leaders because the Congress believes in consensus.”
