SHILLONG: The CSWO has slammed the traditional heads of Umkadhor village in Ri Bhoi for allegedly shielding a rapist in 2015.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, the CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing alleged that one Tuesday Syngkli of Umkadhor had raped a young girl from another village in 2015.
The family of the girl had complained to the village heads about the rape hoping they would hand over the person to the police but it was later hushed up by the traditional heads and the parents of the young girl on Thursday went to file an FIR in Nongpoh police station against Syngkli for rape of their daughter who used to work in his house in 2015.
“As she was studying in a school nearby, the family was assured of schooling and she could help out in the house of Syngkli, who had a family with two children,” Kharshiing said.
He took advantage of the situation and raped the girl besides threatening that she should not tell anyone about the incident,” Kharshiing said.
“However, the girl informed her family members of the incident and the clan had written to the headman about the incident but the village elders warned that they should not report the matter to the police,” Kharshiing alleged.
The CSWO asked the authorities to assist the girl and provide her justice and arrest the rapist and those involved in hushing up the crime. According to CSWO, it was noticed that the perpetrators of such crimes go to the District Council Courts to avail anticipatory bail which are often granted easily without going through records of the case.
She added the bail in a rape case should only be moved in the court where the complaint is taken up.
