Prohibition on poisoning Pynursla water bodies
SHILLONG: The additional deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills has imposed Section 144 prohibiting individuals and organisations from poisoning rivers, streams or any water body in Pynursla sub-division. The order has been issued in view of the frequent poisoning of water bodies in the sub-division. Such poisoning has endangered local indigenous fishes, flora and fauna, besides undermining the local ecology. Also, use of toxins in rivers and streams can pose serious health hazards for humans. Often streams and rivers are poisoned for catching fish in bulk. In the long run, the local economy is hampered as continuous use of poison is making water bodies unfit for aquatic life.
Farm huts torched over land dispute in WJH
SHILLONG: Unknown miscreants burnt down farm huts at Sung village which belonged to the residents of Moodymmai in West Jaintia Hills on April 24 and 25. J. Pariat, Headman of Moodymmai village, has lodged a complaint in this regard. A case has been registered and the matter is being investigated. No arrest has been made so far, police said. According to the police, the case is of land dispute between two villages and last year too, a similar incident had taken place. The matter could not be solved despite the Dolloi’s intervention.
Kidnap, rape charges against ‘lover’ in WKH
NONGSTOIN: A 22-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 15-year-old girl from his village in West Khasi Hills. The accused, Jelius Lyngdoh Marshillong, of Siejlieh village was arrested after members of the girl’s family lodged an FIR at Nongstoin police station saying he kidnapped and raped their daughter last Sunday.Both the girl and the young man are from Siejlieh village. However, sources said the duo was in love but as the girl was a minor, the family lodged the FIR.
One convicted for molestation
JOWAI: An accused in a case under the POCSO Act was convicted by a local court on Tuesday. The district sessions court here fined Shaibor Lyngkhoi, who has already spent more than 3 years in prison, with Rs 25,000 or 6 months of imprisonment. Lyngkhoi, who is from Ummulong, was jailed after his sister-in-law lodged a complaint on April 3, 2014, accusing him of molesting her daughter.
Traditional doctor sets up nursing home
JOWAI: Power Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar inaugurated Rashongsli Nursing Home, set up by a kabiraj or traditional practitioner of medicines, at Amshipai in Amlarem, West Jaintia Hills, on Tuesday. The nursing home has been named after the daughter (Rasongsli Pohshna) of Rom Dhar, the kabiraj. The minister said Rom Dhar has no proper education but has the courage to set up a nursing home for the people of the locality. “This is a good example for others,” said former MLA Lahkmen Rymbui, adding that “we should not depend on the government for everything”.
Banana growers’ body formed
SHILLONG: The Basin Development Unit in Resubelpara in North Garo Hills organised a programme at Kharkutta on Tuesday highlighting the importance of a banana cluster development association.About 164 banana growers participated in the discussion on the new body, the Kharkutta Area Banana Growers’ Association. Cherak W. Momin, the district project manager of the Basin Development Unit, explained the objectives of the association and encouraged banana growers from 41 villages under Kharkutta C&RD Block to be part of the new body. Jembilstone Arengh and Maulish Momin were named the president and the secretary of the association, respectively. Five zonal leaders were also chosen. The association was formed after a market survey at Daranggiri (Assam) banana market, Asia’s largest, bordering Kharkutta.
Teachers’ body elects new office bearers
TURA: The new office bearers of the All Garo Hills Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association (AGHGLPSCTA) were elected in a general meeting held at Mondoltilla Community Hall in Tura on Monday. The association elected Greenjust P Sangma as President, Mellina G Momin as Vice President, MIllingbath D Sangma as General secretary, Gilead Ch Marak as Joint Secretary, Probirth D Marak as Publicity Secretary, Sylvester M Marak as Chief Organizer, Cryslin M Marak as Treasurer, Villinda B Marak as Accountant and Chanang Arengh as Adviser besides three executive members each for all districts.
Traffic official attacked at; man assaulted
SHILLONG: A traffic constable in the city was injured after unidentified miscreants attacked him. The incident took place on Monday evening around 7.30 pm, when unidentified miscreants pelted stones at on duty Firoz Alam of Lumdiengjri Traffic Branch at Mawkhar, causing minor injuries to him. In another case of assault, on the same day, Sylvester Syiemlieh (27) and two juveniles assaulted Tapan Pathak (29) and Rahul Parvat (25) at Sumer village in Ri Bhoi, causing injuries to the victims.
