NEW DELHI: Congress legislators and senior party functionaries have sent an SOS to AICC chief Sonia Gandhi urging her to take “timely action” to save the Meghalaya unit from the onslaught of anti-party activities.
In a letter to Gandhi and AICC vice president Rahul, the Congress leaders, citing examples of anti-party activities at the grassroots as well as the top-most levels that impacted the party’s performance in the recent past, said, “Timely action should be taken to severely punish the perpetrators.”
“This indiscipline should be nipped in the bud, as it may raise its ugly head anytime in the near future when the opposition seeks to forage into the North East states,” the letter said hinting at BJP taking over the northeastern states.
On Saturday, outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee had asked the party high command to speed up decision-making in organisational matters.
The letter to the Gandhis pointed out that at a time when the high command has given a clarion call for unity in the party, a section of the State Cabinet ministers is blatantly defying the vice president’s whip.
The worried Congress leaders have demanded drastic action against those who have gone against the party’s missive despite AICC’s intervention.
“Considerable damage has been done because of such anti-party activities which, if not contained, will dent the Congress’s future in the next polls,” the letter cautioned.
It also took a dig at the independent MLAs who are supporting the Congress in the State but are now acting against the party.
“The party high command has to intervene since such rebel leaders who are in power have not bothered to reply to the showcause notices. Surprisingly, no action has been taken against such leaders who have even confessed to their anti-party activities,” the letter said as it pointed out the rift at the top level crucial times.
