HPF expresses concern over heavy traffic in Mawlai
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep People’s Federation (HPF) Mawlai Circle has expressed concern over heavy traffic witnessed in Mawlai especially from areas of Mawlai Nonglum, Mawlai Iewrynghep, Mawlai Umthlong till the marten at Mawiong. In a press statement, the HPF stated that it is due to the reckless driving of some bus drivers. The organisation has urged the bus drivers to cooperate and not to ride in groups of 3-4 buses together in a line.
Stray dogs menace in Jowai
JOWAI: Concerned over the increasing number of stray dogs in Jowai town, the Chilliang Raij Dorbar Shnong has lodged a complaint with the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner with a request to take necessary action to curtail the menace. According to A. Lanong, general secretary, the increasing number of stray dogs or un-vaccinated stray dogs have created inconvenient to the public as they litter the residential compound. Parents are also concerned for their school going children, and the residents of the village fear to return home after 10 pm as the group dogs wander around the streets at night.
Disabled students body alleges discrimination over scholarship
TURA: The Garo Hills Unit president of the All Meghalaya Association of Persons with Disabilities has alleged discrimination in the issuance of meritorious scholarship to disabled students, which was recently introduced by the State Resource Centre, Civil Hospital in Shillong. The scholarship was introduced for disabled students who are undergoing their studies at institutions recognised by Government of India. In a statement issued here on Tuesday the Association’s Unit president claimed that students from Garo Hills have been deprived of the scholarship as it was issued only to a particular district and that selection of candidates was not done on merit basis but on personal choice by the issuing authority. The leader said, “We demand justice and the scholarship should be distributed equally to all students of the state.”
Student body congratulates toppers
TURA: The GSU CEC under Zikku, Balgra N Marak has lauded the achievement of the toppers of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) results which were declared by MBOSE on Tuesday. The union while wishing all the best to the toppers, they congratulated them for bringing dignity for themselves, their families and the entire community. The union also expressed appreciation to the teachers and institutions responsible for guiding and moulding the successful candidates.
Financial awareness programme held
NONGSTOIN: As part of the financial inclusion agenda of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shillong, a field level financial awareness event was held at the community hall of Mawkhlam-Nongpyndeng village, West Khasi Hills on Wednesday. The programme was attended by P. Gangte, Deputy General Manager RBI Shillong, L. Hangmuanthang, Assistant General Manager RBI Shillong, Utpal Bezbaruah, District Development Manager NABARD Nongstoin, among others. Officials of RBI, Shillong briefed the participants on financial planning, budgeting, financial discipline, precautions against fraudulent e-mails, SMS, phone calls and companies, grievance redressal mechanism in the banking system, features of genuine currency notes, new developments in the field of digital transactions etc. Around 350 people including farmers and members of SHGs attended the programme.
BSF civic action programme in Dalu
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force organised a football match as part a civic action programme at Dalu in West Garo Hills. The match was between the teams of Youth Culture Club, Maghupara, and BSF. The latter won this match by 5-1. Medals and trophies were also distributed to players of both the teams. BSF said in a statement that the outreach programme is aimed at improving the quality of life of border residents. BSF also distributed computers, water tanks, plastic tables and chairs to schools in Dalu.Darbar Singh, 2nd in Command, 75 Bn Headquarters BSF inaugurated the function.
MLCU holds programme on mental health
SHILLONG: The Department of Counselling Psychology, Martin Luther Christian University, organised an awareness programme on mental health at Mawbeh village in Pynursla block on Wednesday. The objective of the programme was to sensitise villagers of the Khasi Hills on mental health.The programme was in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and sponsored by the NSS unit of MLCU. Students of MSc Counselling Psychology gave a brief presentation on mental health.
Financial Literacy Week to be organised by RBI
Shillong: To emphasise the importance of financial literacy among common people, the Reserve Bank of India will observe the Financial Literacy Week across the country fromJune 5 to June 9. The literacy week will focus on four broad themes, viz. KYC, Exercising Credit Discipline, Grievance Redressal and Going Digital (UPI and *99#). The five messages that will be communicated to the common man based on the themes are available under “Financial Literacy Week” in the downloads section of the financial education webpage of RBI www.rbi.org.in. The four fundamental baseline of financial literacy is the difference between an asset and a liability, cash flow versus capital gains, cash flow versus capital gains and making your own financial decisions. An online quiz will be hosted for the general public on the four broad themes to generate interest/awareness about financial literacy. Details of the quiz will be intimated through RBI website www.rbi.org.in.
Demand for upgradation of college in WGH
SHILLONG: Members of the United Peace & Developmental Forum and Garo Students’ Union (GSU) of Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills have submitted a memorandum to Minister of Higher & Technical Education, Roshan Warjri, in connection with the poor status of Tikrikilla College.The members stated that the college has grant-in-aid sanctioned post for one principal, seven teachers, one librarian assistant, one LDA and two grade IV staff while the rest of 12 teachers and 9 ministerial staff were surviving on a lump sum monthly remuneration of Rs 35,000 from the State Government.The members have demanded creation of two new sanctioned posts for each department, 4 new sanctioned posts for ministerial staff and 94 Grade IV posts.There was a demand for the enhancement of the plan head of Rs 35,000 per month, regularisation of all non sanctioned teaching and ministerial staff, introduction of Honours subjects in Economics, History, English and Education.The members also demanded introduction of Commerce stream in the college.

As stated in the new National Health Policy, it plans to add 1.8 million beds in next ten years,” he said. Power shutdown at Khliehriat
SHILLONG: The Assistant Executive Engineer, Khliehriat Distribution Sub-Division-I, MePDCL, Khliehriat has informed that the 33/11KV line at Moowakhu (Khliehriat) Sub-Station will be put under Shut-down from 9 am to 17:00hrs on May 25 due to an emergency Augmentation/installation of 2x10MVA power transformer at Moowakhu (Khliehriat) under ASPA Scheme work.In view of this the power supply to whole of Khliehriat, Ladrymbai, Iooksi, Sutnga, Jalaphet, Saipung, Sumer, Nongkhlieh and part of Byndihati areas will be affected on this day and power supply to Rymbai, Wapung and the adjoining areas will be affected for four to five days, but every effort will be made to complete the work as soon as possible.
PDS goods illegally sold
SHILLONG: The Garo Students Union, Mendal Unit, North Garo recently seized 275 packets of sugar which was meant for sale under public distribution system (PDS) from one Saljing R. Sangma at Gokol market. Later, he was handed over to the Bajengdoba police station. In this connection another caretaker of Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown Diganto Koch, was also arrested by the police for selling PDS goods illegally. The union has also condemned such kind of illegal activities and have filed a complaint against the licence holder of Wholesale to the Deputy Commissioner and the Inspector of Food and Civil Suppliers.They also demanded the licence of the individual issued from FCI to be cancelled for indulging in illegal activities. Police said that they are working on the matter.

Pilot day celebration
SHILLONG: GVK EMRI 108, Meghalaya Operation held a free medical health camp to mark the occasion of Pilot Day celebrations at Parish Community Hall, Wahlang Sohiong Area in East Khasi hills in coordination with the local Dorbar.
