SHILLONG: The State Government has asked the Centre to immediately withdraw the new notification related to cow slaughter stating that it is a state subject and the Centre should not interfere in the matter.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Tuesday, senior Cabinet Minister Prestone Tynsong said it is painful to see the Centre’s encroachment on a subject that lies with the state legislature as mandated by the Constitution.
According to Tynsong, this may lead to infringement among the two authorities.
“We urge the BJP-led Government to withdraw this policy, otherwise it may lead to the division in the country,” Tynsong said.
The Congress leader wanted to know why regulation for slaughter of cow was being inserted in the Wildlife Act without consulting the respective state governments.
“Hence, there is a clear indication that the BJP-led government wanted to suppress the people of Meghalaya who love and live eating beef from time immemorial,” he said.
According to Tynsong, it is a dangerous indication not only for Meghalaya but also for the whole nation.
“I appreciate the leaders of State BJP who had already lodged their protests to the party’s central leadership, which speaks of the true colour of BJP,” Tynsong said.
According to Tynsong, the policy taken either alone by Modi or under pressure from RSS is apparently to ensure that India becomes a Hindu nation.
“Be it from the party or the government, we condemn the stand of the Centre,” he added.
He also asked the Centre why only cow was brought under the Wildlife Act and why not all other animals.
“This means that directly or indirectly, the Centre is asking people to stop eating beef and join the BJP which is dangerous,” he said.
