State kayakers make a splash at Karnataka fest

SHILLONG: Four kayakers from Meghalaya made a splash at the three-day Kali Kayak Festival in Karnataka that concluded on Sunday.
David Vincent competed in the pro category. Banjop Iawphniaw, June Nongbri and Shiningstar Basaiawmoit competed in the intermediate category.
Banjop came third in the Sprint category and Shiningstar was fourth. But Shiningstar came first in the boater-cross category and June was the first runner-up. June was in the team that came second in the endurance category.
Shiningstar was joint first in best intermediate paddler.
This was David’s third whitewater race after Megha Kayak Fest and Ganga Kayak Fest.
For June, Shining and Banjop, this was the second race after Megha Kayak Fest.
Banjop is the first khasi kayaker and is from Mawlai. David has been paddling for about 3 years and also paddles every day on the Umtrew.
June and Shining have been kayaking for about one year and practise in the Umtrew.
The team hopes to compete at the Malabar River Festival in Kerala in July.
