MLCU celebrates decade-long journey
SHILLONG: Martin Luther Christian University, which has completed ten years of its establishment, on Friday kick-started a celebration to commemorate its decade long existence in the State. The event ‘Decennium of Excellence’ was inaugurated in the presence of the Chancellor of the University, Dr. GC Kharkongor, Vice Chancellor RG Lyngdoh, invitees, students, faculty and staff of the University.MLCU was created by Act No. 11 of 2005 of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya and received the assent of the Governor on July 6, 2005. The Government of Meghalaya issued the Gazette Notification on February 22nd 2006. The creation of the University is in accordance with the University Grant Commission Act, 1956 under Section 2(f) and the University is empowered to grant degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act.Speaking at the event, Dr. Kharkongor said the University has come a long way since its inception in 2006.An inter school Quiz competition was held to mark the occasion. BSF Higher Secondary School secured the first prize followed by St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School and Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, respectively.

KJP proposes Bible in Braille script
SHILLONG: To make the Bible accessible to the blind, the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian (KJP) Synod Sepngi has proposed to come up with Braille scriptures.Addressing reporters on Friday, Director of KJP Synod Sepngi Social and Economic Life Development Department Rev SC Diengngan said, “The proposal has been sent to the Bible Society, Shillong Auxiliary.”He added that there are Braille scriptures for the visually impaired, however, only a certain section of the Bible has been in the Braille format and not the entire Bible. The KJP Synod Sepngi has also directed Churches under its jurisdiction to construct ramps for the benefit of persons with disabilities (PWDs). The KJP Synod Sepngi is also proposing to observe a given Sunday as a day for persons with disabilities.

State level awareness on Food Security
Shillong:  A State Level Awareness Programme on National Food Security Act, 2013 was organised by the Meghalaya State Food Commission in coordination with the Deputy Commissioner (Supply), West Garo Hills for all Garo Hills districts at District Auditorium, Tura on Thursday. Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs R C Laloo was the chief guest on the occasion.Addressing the gathering, Laloo spoke about the initiatives of the government to ensure food security in the State through the implementing of the NFSA and functioning of the State Food Commission to provide food and nutritional security. The delivery system mechanism in the State has been put in place by digitization of beneficiaries’ data and computerized system of supply chain management has been taken up in the implementation of the Public Distribution System (PDS), he added.

Training on child protection & child rights held at Ampati
Ampati: A two-day training on child protection & child rights organised by the South West Garo Hills district administration concluded here at Ampati on Friday with participants expressing the need to have more awareness programmes in local languages at the village level to sensitise the people on the rights of the children and their protection from all forms of violence and abuse.The training was organised for MCS and MPS officers, police officers, government officials and pleaders, NGOs and women groups of the district which was also attended by officials of Education and Health departments, school principals as well as teachers.

Diploma course in traditional music
NONGSTOIN: A diploma course in traditional music, in addition to the ongoing certificate course, was inaugurated recently at Nongstoin College by R. Mawroh, Principal Consultant, RUSA Cell, Meghalaya. Mawroh lauded the efforts of the college in running these courses and said this would help in preserving and improving the traditional musical instruments, songs and traditional music in general. The Diploma course is a RUSA funded project.

Convergence committee meet
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills District Administration conducted a district level convergence committee meeting in Nonglwai village.The idea was to bring the district administration to the doorstep of villagers.  Officials from several departments including DRDA, Soil and Water Conservation, DCIC, Non Renewable Energy, PWD, PHE, Handloom/Sericulture, BDO (Nongstoin), Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Tourism, Water Resources, etc., apprised the villagers on the kind of interventions they are going to take up at Nonglwai. The district administration has selected Nonglwai for the heritage village project on the lines of Kisama village in Nagaland, the destination of the world famous Hornbill Festival.

Awareness programme on waste management
SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong Umpling through its Task Force Committee organised an awareness programme at St Rose School on June 3 to implement the Solid Waste Management Project by Mott MacDonald. David A Nongrum, MLA and officers of the Ministry of Urban Development, Department of Urban Affairs and members of the implementing agency and executive members of the Dorbar Shnong were present at the function.Rangbah Shnong, Umpling SF Pyngrope welcomed the initiative for a more organised solid waste disposal system and assured those present that vigil will be maintained to ensure that residents follow the instructions strictly.Pritam Kapur, who represented the Urban Affairs Ministry spoke on the need to manage solid waste scientifically by segregating domestic waste at the household level and for which purpose the Government has been distributing the blue and green buckets for dry and wet waste respectively.

District Task Force for Urban Immunisation formed
SHILLONG:  The District Administration, Tura in West Garo Hills has informed that the District Task Force for Urban Immunisation has been formed on May, 2017 and the Urban Health Mission under National Health Mission has been launched in the town and functioning since 2014. It may be mentioned that the aim of the programme is to reach the outreach population of Tura so as to cater all available health services to the needy people.

DAVP exhibition opened
SHILLONG: The mega exhibition of the DAVP, Shillong unit had begun on Thursday. The five-day exhibition was inaugurated by G. Panmei, Commissioner Central GST for Northeast. The exhibition is on the theme of Saath hai, Vishwaas hai.. Ho raha Vikaas hai.. The exhibition will be open to the public till June 11. Several new and innovative communication methods have been adopted in the current exhibition. The Deputy Director of DAVP, Shillong, said that awareness of the schemes is very vital in reaping the benefits of the programmes of the government.
