SHILLONG: The rescue operations of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at the landslide site at Tharia, Umiam, in Ri Bhoi district have come to an end with the recovery of the fifth body on Sunday afternoon.
The body of the last victim, identified as Cristina Lama (55) alias Kali Mai, was recovered in the afternoon.
The body of her 25-year-old daughter Rina Lama was recovered on Saturday evening.
Earlier on Saturday after the landslide at 5 am, the bodies of a couple who were workers at the plywood factory at Tharia were recovered. They were identified as Loba Mahanta (25) and wife Babbi Mahanta (19). Later, the body of a minor girl identified as Santi Lama (12) was also recovered.
Another injured, Banti Lama (13), was shifted to Shillong civil hospital.
Altogether nine people were injured in the incident.
In a statement, Paul H. Shylla, Junior Staff Officer cum Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, said on Sunday the rescue team swung into action at 9 am on Saturday.
The team of 12 jawans of the State Disaster Response Force of the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, led by the Deputy Controller of Civil Defence (Shillong) and Officer in Charge, SDRF, worked for almost 38 hours along with the personnel of Fire and Emergency Services, Ri Bhoi district officials and local inhabitants.
According to the officer in-charge, SDRF, the operation was stopped after the body of the final missing woman was found.
