SHILLONG: A move by the Congress is afoot to topple the P.N Syiem-led Executive Committee in the KHADC.
A party source said top Congress functionaries are reaching out to the KHADC MDCs to muster support to oust the EC led by the suspended Congress CEM.
If the Congress manages to get the numbers, the party may move a non-confidence motion during the KHADC session starting from Tuesday.
However, sources said the MDCs who were approached by the party are not willing to forge an alliance with the Congress considering the issues plaguing the State which are yet to be solved by the party in power.
With the Assembly elections just six months away, the MDCs are not keen to have any truck with the Congress as they consider that this will affect their poll prospects in case they decide to contest the Assembly polls.
Some non-Congress MDCs consider that starting from the ban on coal and limestone mining to issues related to the jurisdiction of MUDA and curtailing of powers of headmen, the Congress had not done anything to ameliorate the concerns of the people affected.
Sources close to Syiem said the Congress had first tried to target the KHADC CEM by passing the dual post bill and subsequently to weaken him, the party placed him under suspension for three years.
The fresh move of the Congress to oust him from power is the last ditch effort ahead of the Assembly polls, sources added.
However, the UDP MDCs are unlikely to support the Congress as in the past UDP chief Donkupar Roy had said the party desires that the Syiem-led EC completes its full term.
Sources added that even when the Central Executive Committee of the UDP recommended withdrawal of support to Syiem in the past, UDP MDCs Donkupar Sumer and Teinwell Dkhar had extended support to him.
