SHILLONG/JOWAI: Meghalaya joined the worldwide celebrations on Yoga Day on Wednesday by organising sessions in different places.
Planning Secretary B.D.R Tiwari inaugurated a programme at Assam Kristi Kendra in Dhankheti. Former minister Manas Chaudhuri was also present at the event.
The programme, which started at 7am with an audio-visual message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was jointly organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra and the Art of Living Foundation, Meghalaya. Over 300 participated.
The yoga session was conducted by instructors from Art of Living.
North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoepathy celebrated the third International Yoga Day on its premises.
Dr D.M Thappa, Director, NEIGRIHMS, suggested collaboration between NEIAH and NEIGRIHMS for yoga sessions for the benefit of patients.
Schools, colleges and government officials participated with equal fervour. Quiz, slogan and banner writing competitions marked the day at Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax Shillong.
An hour-long yoga session was organised at Martin Luther Christian University on its campus. The session was led by yoga instructor Sharlene Das. The yoga session was also attended by the Vice Chancellor R.G Lyngdoh.
Around 80 cadets of NCC and NSS participated in Wednesday’s event at Shillong College. Shailesh and Chandan from city-based Gayatri Foundation were the yoga instructors. Principal K.D Ramsiej also joined the session.
The one-month free yoga workshop organised by BBS College (NSS and NCC Units) in collaboration with Art of Living culminated on Wednesday.
International Day for Yoga was also celebrated by 42 Meghalaya Sig Coy NCC at various schools and colleges in the city. More than 700 caders and students participated in the event.
More than hundreds of students from Seven Hut School Mawlai and Seng Khasi School participated in the Yoga Day programme organised by NCC in collaboration with Art of Living. Yoga instructor Panchali Bhattacharjee assisted by Nilima Dey guided the schoolchildren.
The NCC cadets of Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary, Sohra, conducted yoga competition. RKM Secondary School, Shella, won the best team.
In Jowai, the National Service Scheme of Thomas Jones Synod College celebrated the day by organising exercise on the theme ‘Yoga for Peace and Harmony’.
The Shillong Cantonment Board organised a two-day training programme in Jhalupara on Monday and Tuesday. Trainers from Art of Living came for the sessions.
The Border Security Force organised yoga camps at FTR headquarters and 2000-odd personnel participated in Tura and Shillong.
The Assam Regimental Centre at Happy Valley also organised a programme.
Similarly NCC of NER cadets performed asanas under expert guidance.
A grand event for all Central Armed Police Forces in Meghalaya was organised by Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles at Assam Rifles Sports Complex in the city on Wednesday. More than 750 soldiers performed various breathing exercises and asanas.
SNGCC, Shillong, celebrated International Yoga Day at its newly laid temple premises in Jiengkieng.
Kripa Foundation had its programme at Landmark Hotel in Shillong.
Bharat Swabhiman Trust (Patanjali Yog Pith) in the city had its session in association with two more organsations at Indoor Stadium, Nehru Sports Complex, in Polo.
The Marwari Samaj in the city organised an hour-long session at Rajasthan Vishram Bhawan on Luckier Road.
NSS and NCC in collaboration with IQAC of St Edmund’s college celebrated International Yoga Day by organising a yoga session in the college auditorium. About 100 student volunteers of NSS and NCC participated in the event.
