TURA: The former chairman of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and ex-member (MDC) Cary Marak, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances and was presumed kidnapped, was ‘released’ in Assam on Thursday evening.
Marak called up his elder brother in Tura from a public call booth at Agia village, near Goalpara town of Assam, around 5 PM to inform that he had been released safe and sound by his captors.
He reportedly informed that the kidnappers confiscated all his documents, wallet and mobile phone before letting him off. The kidnappers are also said to have arranged a vehicle for Marak to transport him back home. He had left Shillong on Tuesday for Bongaigaon when he disappeared. He later called up his family members informing of his confinement. The kidnappers reportedly demanded Rs 4 Lakh as ransom for his release. It was later scaled down to one lakh and a family member later deposited Rs 70,000 to secure his release.
