SHILLONG: A.L Hek, who is the president of the Shillong Golfers Association, wrote to the president of Delhi Golf Club on Thursday demanding unconditional apology from the staff members who “racially discriminated a Khasi lady at the club for wearing traditional Jainsem”.
While condemning the behavior, Hek wrote that this kind of negative mindset “endangers the unity and integrity of India where northeasterners are being treated as second-class citizens and illegal immigrants within the country”.
Meanwhile, Rev. PBM Basaiawmoit from the North East Dialogue Forum wrote to the Union Minister for Home Affairs seeking corrective proactive action.
He said the subsequent statement issued by Delhi Golf Club further antagonises and infuriates when it stated that it was “unfortunate and regrettable that an undesirable attempt is being made to give this incident a political and cultural overtone”.
Traditional heads & YMCA
The Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniew Trep (SNSBH), which is a conglomeration of traditional heads in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, condemned the “arrogant attitude” of the club officials. The body too demanded unconditional apology.
YMCA also joined in condemning the incident.
