‘MLA publicised MHIS-III for wide enrolment’
SHILLONG: Criticising the allegations levelled against South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai about his initiative to popularise the MHIS-III scheme, his supporters said that they had come across pamphlets and other documents, but nowhere was it seen that Shullai had projected it as an MLA Scheme. A statement issued by the supporters said that the announcements made by him through various means, only show his commitment to the people. According to the supporters from the South Shillong Constituency, vested interests are trying to malign his image by providing misleading statement to the public, while they are thankful for the work and service rendered by their MLA. They said that the wide publicity given by Shullai resulted in increase in the number of enrolment to MHIS and added that they do not know whether other MLAs are taking such initiatives to inform the public.
HYC attacks CM over Mawshynrut civil sub-division
NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has lashed out at the Government for delaying the inauguration of Mawshynrut civil sub-division. HYC’s Sranly Rongrin told media persons that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on March 15 announced the opening of new civil sub-divisions, including Mawshynrut. While other sub-divisions have already been inaugurated, Mawshynrut is still waiting for its turn. “Mawshynrut has a vast area and should have been given first preference,” said Rongrin and alleged that it was a fake promise and Sangma’s political gimmick.
700 students wait for admission
SHILLONG: The Achik Students Welfare Association (ASWA) submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma regarding the lack of sufficient seats in Government colleges which has resulted in many students not getting admission. A case in point is the condition in Garo Hills where as many as 700 students who passed out their HSSLC examination are awaiting admission.The NGO has issued a five-day deadline to the State Government to give admission to these students. They said that they would resort to protest if their demands are not met. When contacted, government sources said that there is a need to build more government colleges in all parts of the state. Last year in July over 3,000 students who cleared Class X examinations from different institutions, were left out though they had applied for admissions in various government higher secondary institutions in the state for Arts, Science and Commerce streams.
JHADC to shutdown China Bazar in Jowai
JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has decided to shut down China Bazar run by a non-tribal in Iawmusiang, Jowai for the time being until the owner proof his ownership provided he follow all norms of the JHADC Taxation department. The valid documents such as Professional Tax, Temporary Clearance Certificate (TCC) and No Objection Certificate from the local Dorbar, Tympang Club, Iawmusiang is needed as proof. It may be mentioned that the owner of the shop could not produce any document during an inspection conducted jointly by the JHADC officials along with the members of JSU and JYF. The issue of China Bazar in Iawmusiang has also been in the news when the President of Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF) claimed to be the owner of the shop. He claimed that he has bought the shop for 90,000 but could not proof that he had bought the shop. Interestingly, he did not even know the name of his two non-tribal employees and no sale deed was produced as proof of ownership.
Nongstoin Youth Organisation elects office bearers
NONGSTOIN: The Nongstoin Youth Welfare Organisation (NYWO), the sponsors of Nongstoin College, on Thursday elected new office bearers. Lumbor Mawsor has been elected the organisation’s president for 2017-2019. Mawsor succeeds J.K Dewsaw who was the president for 30 years. “Without the vision of those who had rendered their service the college would not have been in a position that it is in today,” Lumbor said. Other new office bearers include Playing Dkhar as vice president, Wanllamkupar Marwein as general secy, Donborlin Dkhar as assistant secretary and Ephoda Dkhar as treasurer.
Two-day training on emergency management
NONGSTOIN: A two-day training programme on emergency management and rescue operations organised by the West Khasi Hills District Disaster Management Authority concluded on Thursday. The programme was in collaboration with the Central Training Institute, Civil Defence and Home Guards, Shillong. A demonstration on road safety with special emphasis on accidents was carried by the trainees as part of the exercises.
Summersalt, church to hold road show today
SHILLONG: A Church organisation of the KJP Synod Sepngi along with Shillong’s folk-fusion band Summersalt will hold a road show together called, ‘Strike Down’ on Friday which served as an awareness programme on gender violence through music and to protest against violence against children and women.The event was organised in collaboration with event partner Urban Mission, KJP Synod Sepngi. The show is organised in the backdrop of growing incidents of gender violence in the last few years and serves as a sign to remind people of the need to condemn this criminal act and strengthen the stance against murder, rape or any sexual violence against children and women. There will also be an art installation by the city’s celebrated artist Careen J.Langstieh to reinforce the intent. In a statement to the press, Summersalt band member, Kitkupar Shangpliang said according to the information by Meghalaya Police, there have been 184 cases of violence against children and women from January till April this year, and behind those numbers are real people and their families.
Quack doctor steals from patient
JOWAI: A person has filed an FIR stating that the doctor, who was treating his wife in West Jaintia Hills, stole her gold ornaments. In the FIR, the person identified as P.Kharlukhi of Khimusniang locality said that on June 23, one quack doctor Tapan Oja of Lankapatti, Nagaon, Assam, who was treating his wife cheated her and stole gold ornaments weighing 7 tolas from her house at Khimusniang, Jowai.
National Statistics Day held
SHILLONG: The National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division) here observed the National Statistics Day to mark the birth anniversary of PC Mahalanobis, the ‘Father of Indian Statistical System’, at Raitong Conference Hall on Thursday. Delivering the keynote address on the theme ‘Administrative Statistics’, Senior Statistical Officer D. Gurung said, “Globally, statistics is very much streamlined from the level of the United Nations.” Stating that huge database is required in India, Gurung pointed out that through Aadhaar database, the Government can collect information of citizens. June 29 was declared National Statistics Day in 2006.
