SHILLONG: The employees of Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) have decided to continue their strike even as PM Sangma took charge from outgoing managing director A. Nikhla on Friday evening.
K. Rumnong, general secretary of MTC Workers’ Union, said, “We will continue to agitate even if the new MD comes. It is not that we are against him but (we are) against the State Government for not revoking the transfer order (of Nikhla).” The MTC Workers’ Union, through its president Erwin Sutnga, will approach the Union Ministry of Surface Transport because “the Centre has a say in the functioning of the corporation”.
“I will be leaving on Sunday for Delhi and brief the MPs of the State as well,” said Sutnga on Friday.
The strike started on June 27 after the Government issued transfer order for Nikhla. All services, including school buses, helicopters and railway ticket counters, were stopped and will continue to be so “till demands are met”.
Rumnong said the union had submitted a memorandum in this regard to Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma but there was no response from the Government.
