SHILLONG: Delay by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the monsoon are obstructing work on the Umiam-Jorabat four-lane project that will be commissioned not before December.
State officials said only 10-20 per cent work is left but the project will be delayed due to the rains.
An official said the Umiam bypass has been delayed because of NHAI that decided to construct a vehicle underpass and a minor bridge. The two structures are out of the contract agreement.
“We have not even received the final order for the two infrastructure but we have only received the principle approval,” the official said. However, repair of the existing Umsning road has started following the intervention of the district administration. But a proposal for overlay of the entire road is pending with the NHAI headquarters.
NHAI is building the 62-km Umiam-Jorabat road (NH-6) at an estimated cost of Rs 536 crore.
