SHILLONG: A murder case has been registered in the lynching of an alleged rapist in Upper Shillong on Saturday.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem said Yaqub Khan Nongkynrih, who allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl, succumbed on the way to hospital. Also, the mob obstructed police from performing duties.
“The accused was confined (in his room) from 3.30 pm and police was informed about the incident at 7 pm,” he said and added that it was the secretary of Nongkseh Rim who informed the police. Nongkynrih suffered internal injuries and succumbed on Sunday.
Police have also registered a case of abetment since many people were instigating the mob. “We are in the process of identifying those people who were involved in assaulting him,” Syiem said.
The SP, in a strong-worded message, said police would not allow such lawlessness and “now the law will take its own course against those who were involved in lynching the person”.
Bansharai Thangkhiew (44) and Badonlang Kharlyngdoh, the father and the brother of the victim, respectively, were arrested on Sunday. The minor victim is also being questioned.
It was Kharlyngdoh who first saw lewd photos of his sister in Nongkynrih’s phone and informed the family. The latter was locked up.
The accused rapist was married and he had three children.
Meanwhile, the postmortem has been conducted and the body has been handed over to the relatives.
